When people ask you, "What are you stuyding?" If you say, "Pre-med", "Engineering" or, "Under water basket weaving" people can connect with that and they understand what it is you do. When you respond, "computer science" they imagine that you sit in front of a computer screen watching green text on a black background and control the internets with
your mind.
One of the required courses in my major is a computer graphics class is called Computer Graphics. This isn't so much a class about how to make things look pretty as it is a class about how to give tools to artists who make things look pretty. If you've ever used photo shop, the artists are the people who use photo shop, the Computer Scientists are the ones who built the program. My final project for this course dealt with surface deformation. This is the idea of taking a flat surface and making it react to the impact of an object. So in the end, I spent 25+ hours on a project to make dents in a wall. The reason it took as much time as it did was that the technology I was working with had only been out for a couple months when I was building my project. The professor for the class (A Ph. D in computer craphics) had never even used the technology before.
Think about the nail box toys that used to be available. You could push your hand into the nails and leave a hand print by moving the nails back slightly (I searched for quite a while for this picture!)
My project used the exact same idea of taking points on the surface and moving then back when a bouncing ball got close to them.
With more work, this idea could turn into a car crash simulator or a bullet hitting a wall in a video game. Pretty spiffy, huh? Definitely going on my resume!
