I started to grow facial hair in the summer of 2008, a couple of months before Kacie and I started dating. I was on a missions trip to China with four other guys and we made an agreement that none of us would shave through the entire month long trip (one of the guys broke this promise, but that's another story). I have had facial hair for literally 3.5 years straight.
For a few weeks, I had been thinking of shaving it off just for a change and to see everyone's reaction. My friends at college have never seen me without a beard. It was getting a little too long, but trimming it carefully to the proper length is difficult and time consuming. So finally one morning I just shaved it off.
I went to work at 8 am that day. When my friend walked into the office at 9:30 am or so, he stopped dead in his tracks and pointed at my chin in shock. Time to reaction: 4 seconds.
Later that day I saw one of my roommates and he immediately exclaimed: "What happened to you?" Time to react 3 seconds.
One of my on campus jobs is a manager at the IT Help Desk. When I showed up for my evening manager shift, one of the students who works for me jumped and asked me what had happened. He excused me of killing the gopher that lived on my face (he's a little unique). Time to react: 12 seconds.
I went to dinner with Kacie later that night. I expected her to comment right away, as she's been bugging me to shave for days. When she showed up in front of our dining center, she didn't say anything, but had to run to the restroom. Before we walked in I gave her a hug and our cheeks touched (usually mine would be scratchy). No comment.
After we got our food we sat at a table across from each other. We were looking at each other the whole time and she even glanced at my chin a couple times. No reaction.
About halfway through dinner I got up to get something else to drink. I saw another friend of mine, named Kyle, by the drink station. I asked him how his night was going and talked for a second. He immediately said, "I'm doing well, and you're clean shaven!" Time to reaction: 24 seconds. I informed him Kacie still hadn't said anything, and he bet me she just wasn't saying anything.
After dinner, we walked over to the Computer Science department because a project of mine was on display. Kacie had me stand by it and took this picture:
And didn't comment. We sent the picture to my mother in a text message. She responded a couple hours later and commented on the fact that I shaved. Kacie still hadn't noticed.
We went to Kacie's dorm room to hang out for a while. We sat on her couch and did homework. At the end of the night I gave her a hug as I was leaving. This time she said, "Hey...you shaved!" And then a second later, "Hey...wait a minute!" As the realization dawned on her. Time to reaction: 3 hours 13 minutes.
I guess guys aren't the only ones who have trouble noticing a partner's changing hair styles.

| A good example of me with facial hair. If we look a little wide eyed it's because we're at H | earst Castle in California. |
